Vinyl Aftercare: Best Practices for Signs and Vehicle Wraps

Proper aftercare is essential to maintaining the appearance and longevity of vinyl graphics, whether on vehicles or signage.

Vinyl Aftercare: Best Practices for Signs and Vehicle Wraps

At Mtec Graphics, we provide high-quality wraps and signs, and following these aftercare guidelines will help preserve their finish, durability, and effectiveness over time.

Initial Aftercare: Gas-Out Time and Seal Coating

For newly installed vinyl wraps and printed signage, it’s important to allow for a gas-out period. This is the time required for any residual solvents in the print to fully evaporate, preventing bubbling, lifting, or premature degradation. We recommend allowing at least 48 to 72 hour before exposing new graphics to moisture or cleaning.

Additionally, applying a seal coating to fresh vinyl wraps can offer extra protection. Sealants help to safeguard against dirt, grime, and UV exposure, enhancing longevity and keeping colours vibrant for longer. Professional-grade sealants are specifically formulated for vinyl and can significantly extend the wrap’s lifespan.

Washing and Cleaning Best Practices

Regular cleaning is vital for keeping vinyl graphics looking their best, but improper washing techniques can cause damage. Here’s how to clean vinyl wraps and signage safely:

- Hand washing is best: Use a soft sponge or microfibre cloth with a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals that can break down the adhesive or damage the finish.
- No traffic film removers (TFR): TFRs contain strong chemicals that can strip protective coatings and cause premature fading or peeling. Always use a **pH-neutral cleaner designed for vinyl wraps.
- **Pressure washing caution: If using a pressure washer, keep the pressure below 1,500 psi**, maintain a distance of at least 1 metre, and use a wide-angle spray at no more than 60°C. Directing high-pressure water at edges or seams can cause lifting.
- Avoid abrasive tools: Never use scrubbing pads, stiff brushes, or rough sponges, as they can scratch or tear the vinyl.
- Drying properly: Use a clean microfibre towel or allow the vinyl to air dry. Avoid using heat guns or excessive forced air drying.

Protecting Against UV Fading

Over time, exposure to sunlight will naturally cause some fading, especially for brightly coloured or darker-toned graphics. To slow down fading and maintain vibrancy:

- Park in the shade or indoors when possible.
- Use a UV-protective wax or sealant (only products specifically designed for vinyl).
- Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat High temperatures can cause the adhesive to degrade faster.

Long-Term Maintenance and Lifespan

The lifespan of a vinyl wrap or sign depends on exposure levels, maintenance, and installation quality. With proper care, vehicle wraps can last 5 to 7 years, while static signage can last even longer. Regular inspections for lifting, cracking, or discolouration can help catch early signs of wear, allowing for timely repairs or replacements.

By following these best practices, you can keep your vinyl signage and vehicle wraps in top condition for years to come. For more advice on aftercare, speak to the experts at Mtec Graphics.
